Many of us can personally relate to stories about a long, difficult and confusing process when going through the diagnosis period of mitochondrial disease.  Why?
1.  The disease is under-recognized, misunderstood, and under-diagnosed.  2.  The symptoms are confusing and may not make "sense".  Treatments which are supposed to improve one's symptoms may not help at all, or may make the symptoms worse!  Multiple organ systems and seemingly unrelated symptoms are actually a hallmark of mitochondrial disease.
3.  Awareness is crucial.  Many families who receive a Mito diagnosis have never even heard the words, "Mitochondrial disease."
4.  Physicians who specialize in mitochondrial and metabolic diseases are few and are often overwhelmed.
5.  Families and patients - including adults - need one another.

We want to help.  Support of Mito patients and families is why MitoAction exists today.

The Mito 411 program was created to offer a way for patients or family members who need support to be able to connect with a volunteer that can relate.  We send Mito 411 postcards to physicians and clinics all over the country in an effort to let others know that they are not alone.

Mito 411 needs volunteers for 2008!
Join us for a volunteer training, tonight at 8:00 p.m. (EDT) or Friday October 19 at 10:00 a.m. (EDT).

Trainings are held by phone, toll-free 866-414-2828, particpant code 017921, and last about an hour.

AWARENESS IS OUR MISSION

As we reflect back on our first-ever National Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week (September 16-22, 2007), we are so excited by the strides the Mito community has made because of your effort and enthusiasm!

Sharing your story with the media - TV, radio, news - is a great way to educate the community about Mito - an often "invisible" yet progressive and disabling disease.

WANTED: YOUR IDEAS!
Submit project proposals to MitoAction

ideaEach year we ask our community of parents, patients, family members, and clinicians to share ideas and program suggestions which fulfill MitoAction's mission of support, education, and advocacy.

Last year, MitoAction was proud to fund Mito 411, the illustrated children's g-tube book, an equipment recycling program, and family-friendly articles written by pediatrician Dr. Gwenn.  In addition, a large amount was assigned to fund a primary care guide to mitochondrial disease (available at the end of 2007).

Try outlining your ideas in our project proposal form, using your own experience as a guide.

Let us help you to take ACTION to improve quality of life for those who are living with Mito!
General Meetings are the Place to Be!

First Friday of the month, noon (edt)
Toll-free 866-414-2828, particpant code 017921

Want to connect with other adult patients, spouses, parents, clinicans or caregivers who CARE about mitochondrial disease?  You must join in a general meeting!

Open to all, our first Friday meetings are an opportunity to generate support as well as ideas about ways we can improve quality of life.  We believe in learning from one another, and our general meetings provide a forum for us to work together.

Next meeting: Friday November 2, 2007 NOON (edt)

Thank you for joining us in our mission to make a difference TODAY.

Warmly,
Cristy
