Print Since diagnosis of MELAS a few years ago, I started using the "sick formula" that was devised for use in children with mito disease who contract a infectious illness. For adults, this consists of 10mg biotin,1-2g vit. c (25mg/kg/day-sustained release divided BID, or QID for standard tablets)30mg zinc,from5-10mg/kg/day chelated magnesium divided BID,and 200-800mg alpha-lipoic acid(5-10mg/kg/day,divded BID) This is given at the first sign of infection and continued for 5-10 days (not longer). It is designed as an acute outpatient intervention, not to replace a visit to the primary care physician for anti-biotics if required. *This text was directly copied from the Mitochondrial and metabolic disorders-primary care physicians guide.(2003) . I used to get quite a few chest infections with a cold or flu. Since starting this "sick formula" the first day i feel a cold coming on, I take it & it just seems to dissapear! ( i only actually take it for 3 days) My doctor is actually quite impressed with the results. Everyone may already have this info, but if not, i wanted to share, as it has truly been my saving grace many, many times!
