My daughter is in 1st grade and is in regular classes "normal" as we call it.  She gets some modifications as far as having a drink at her desks and snacks.  She gets so much homework every night I officially give up.  She isn't into it or she is too tired.  I meet with them tomorrow.  I am already considering repeating it and not worrying about it at all.  I just wondered if anyone else is having their kid struggle in regular classes with the same expectations as the other kids and maybe just not up to par.  She is failing most of her classes....anyone else have issues?

Hi Liberty, Can I ask if your daughter has a health care plan, an IEP or 504 on record with the school? It sounds as though there is a misunderstanding as to the variablity and ambiguity as to how her fatigue impacts her ability to do homework/classwork. There are many accommodations and modifications that can be introduced so that your daughter is taught to master/meet the grade level expectations (GLE's) without her having to do "tons" of homework. Feel free to email me at education@mitoaction.org, as I am the chairperson for education and advocacy for Mitokids here at MitoAction. Maybe I can give you some ideas to present at the meeting tomorrow, which may lesson the stressors for all of you. Be well, Kayjay

Hi Liberty- I have struggled with some of what you are talking about. It's very important you have everything lined out in your IEP or 504 with the school. I also recommend you having the school check out Mitoaction's website. Our school has found it very helpful in dealing with our 1st grade son. Just like it is a learning process for you and your family it will also be a learning process for the school. Not very many schools know how to deal with this diseas. Hang in there.
