Neck Weakness

I had cardiothoracic surgery about 5 weeks ago to remove a tumor from my chest and my thymus gland. Ever since, I have been having headaches upon standing and also severe muscle weakness. My neck just feels to weak to hold up my head.

I am not sure if this is normal after such a traumatic surgery. My BP had also shot up after surgery but is back to normal.

I am thinking I will have to resort to a brace to help. The only way currently of relieving my headache and weakness is to lie down. I have a 2 year old and want to be active with her. I love all the silly things we do together and I just feel like all this laying around is exhausting, yet the weakness is keepign me down.

Is this a normal progression of Mito? I have not been officially diagnosed, and neither has my daughter. Both of us have suspected Mito and labs that are leaning toward mito diagnosis, but no confirmation.

With Mito, you can go downhill temporarily, after surgery or stress. It may take awhile to come back up to your base functioning. I have been complaining for 20 years that my neck doesn't feel like it wants to support my head. My neck is always hot at the back also. I believe it is to do with the central nervous system. I know that the pain in my neck and shoulders is neuro-pathic. It went away on "gabapentin" but i had to stop using it for weight gain reasons, which was dissapointing. With having trouble in the carb. complexes,I and II, by reducing carb.s in my diet, i am seeing some benifit. Also with the D-Ribose! I found it interesting, in your post you mentioned having a tumour removed from your thoracic area. My brother (with Mito) also had the same thing??? I am sure you will find lots of support on this site along your mito journey.

When I'm having a bad day I find it hard to keep my head from flopping around. I also get headaches when I am weary and try to do something. Unlike me, try to be patient! Recovery is normally SLOW with mito. Don't give up hope that it will get better. If you use a brace it might be good to talk to a physical therapist about ways to try to strengthen your neck in an effort to not have to use the brace as much.

My son has always had an issue with his neck. When he was younger he sat with his head sort of on his shoulders--he sort of folded it back so he did not use the neck--very strange looking! As he has gotten stronger/older and on the mito cocktail and fluids up, better nutrition this has gone away but when he gets run down I can see him using his old 'head support trick'. If I were you, noor117, I would use a brace for right now and take VERY good care of yourself. I know my son bounces back much faster from things if I am VERY careful about his food/fluids/supplements, etc. Your body is fighting hard everyday and the extra stress of the surgery and BP issues means you need to give it lots of extra help to get back to your baseline. My son is 2 also and I am sure you spend more time worrying about your daughter than yourself. Good luck to you. I hope things get better.

In my Kindergarten and elementary school pictures, i notice my head is tilted to one side in most of my photos.I suppose i was slightly symptomatic then, with the neck issue? It is great to be figuring out, what the cause is and what can be done to improve it or lessen pain at least, even if it is 40 years later! You learn good coping skills! What i do use when it is really bad, is a "whiplash collar". The foam is thick enough to support your head. It's a cheap quick alternitive to a brace. And so easy to take off when it doesn't go with your outfit! Kidding! Sometimes just wearing it for an hour gives a bit of relief. I use those "magic bags" heated in the microwave, on my neck 4 or 5 times a day.(feels great for 10 min.s after, then comes back) The one i couldn't live without, is my massage unit. It pulses into the muscle, with doing the shoulders, neck and temples, i can actually stop a migraine 90% of the time.It always seems to start pounding in my right temple? It is painful, but the relief of the migraine stopping is worth it. If i don't have full body massages every few days, i can hardly move. Bless my husband!

Wow, That is one of the first things I ever noticed about Anthony. I remember the first time we ended up in the ER they asked us if we had noticed anything leading up to the event. The only thing we could think of is him not being able to hold his head up. He was 4 months old. In almost all his pictures you will see him with his head hanging to one side. Who knew? If we would have had our daughter first we really would have know something was not right. It is still one of the first things we notice when he starts to get tired.

Might want to get him a neck pillow that is normally for sleeping in cars or on planes. Might help keep the neck pain down during recovery.
