Hello. My husband has MELAS and I am his caregiver. Are you new to the site? 

your not alone my wife has leighs disease

My husband has been ill for almost 11 years.....for most of the time docs told him he was "drug seeking".....he would have bouts of nausea and vomitting that would last for weeks.....ultimately his esophagus ruptured, they then did a head ct and found lesions which lead to MS diagnosis, then peripheral neurophy and possible family history added a diagnosis of Charcot Maria Tooth......added on to Hashimoto's ( his body literaly destroyed his thyroid) and retinitis pigmentosa......MDA doc's have sent off genetic tests for MNGIE......( he doesn't have MS or CMT.....he is 5'4 and weighs maybe 100 lbs .....)

I have watched him struggle and at this point I realy don't think he has much desire to live......except for our 2 beautiful children. I am stresses out all the time as I have been the only income ( Mom, 'Dad', caregiver all in one.....cook, maid, chauffer etc....) He always thought he would be able to work again and never dreamed of filing for ssdi .....until recently and was told.....he couldn't file because he has had no income in last 10 years.....I make too much for him to receive SSI......

Don't mean to be carrying on......sometimes it's just frustrating dealing with it all........
