shortage of iv magnesium and more
I've been told by my home infusion company that due to quality control the government recently shut down several plants that manufacture IV magnesium among other drugs. I live in PA but apparently this is a nationwide problem affecting people who require IV electrolytes or TPN, for cancer patiens (as some chemo drugs lower magnesium levels), and for transplant patients. I've been on enormous amounts of IV magnesium and potassium daily for years. I also take pill form but depend on IV form for survival. We've been told that some hospitals are receiving limited amount of IV magnesium sporadically and that even if they would have enough of a supply, they probably won't want to give as much as I require to one single person.
I was told last week that my home infusion company only has enough of a supply to fill two more weeks worth of my IV bags!!! I know that when I run out of IV bags I'm going to have to go to the ER. But I know how that goes...and they're normally not comfortable with the amount of IV electrolytes I require. If they don't have enough of a supply to maintain my blood levels... I feel like I've basically got less than two weeks left to live.
Is anyone else having this problem? If anyone has any advice as to how to go about receiving the IV magnesium that I need to stay alive...please, please, please email me or respond to this post. I'm panicking and I need help.
