The Pizza Test

When I was trying to get a diagnosis for Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis, I did what I called the Pizza Test (not a formal test for any condition, but a decent indicator that something is wrong).  Has anyone else done something similar?  What where its affects on you?

Pizza Test:

1) Eat a low carbohydrate diet (80-150 grams of carbs per day) for a week.  Document how you feel during the week.

2) At the end of the week eat a high carb meal (like Pizza).  Document how you feel for the rest of the day and the next day.

3)  If you need a low carb diet, you will feel better during the week of the test, especially towards the end of the week.  The Pizza will make you feel terrible.  If you need a high carb diet you will feel increasingly miserable during the week and then much better after the high carb meal.

When my husband does this

Submitted by beck7422 on Sat, 03/07/2009 - 10:30pm.

When my husband does this test, he has no problem at all. When I do this test, I feel great or better the low carb days, but on the 24 hours after taking the Pizza I am so scary bad I think of going to the ER again. I just tested myself again on the Pizza Test for the first time since going on the Levocarnitine. Dear God I feel terrible. Just this afternoon I was doing very well. The only difference was my Pizza dinner... :(

If I have too many carbs, or

Submitted by cellolover on Sun, 03/08/2009 - 12:34pm.

If I have too many carbs, or crummy ones like white sugar and/or flour, I get tired, grumpy and I get a tension headache. Before I started eating a lower carb diet I had constant muscle spasms all up and down my neck and back. After a few years on the lower carb diet I am finally able to have a small amount of fruit without nasty side effects. On the pizza note, sometimes my mom will make me a whole wheat pizza with no sugar and pile on the toppings. I can have some of that without crashing.

I am trying to figure this one out too.I crave carbs!....Checking to see weather it has anything to do with "Fatty Oxidation Disorder"...if so, i believe i need to be on a high carb, low fat diet. I am going to try your "pizza test". Do you already have a low carb diet plan figured out? It would sure save time and energy if you would like to share??? Many thanks, jan

I can't eat things like a fatty pizza, but complex-carbs, like whole grains,Corn Starch any carb that breaks down slow. I know when I eat a fatty food I'm in so much pain, that I make sure to avoid that food. At night I actually take 4 tbsp. of cornstarch in water, it feeds my body all night. Also helps with cramps at night. I hope I helped some.....Eat Healthy..God Bless..Lori:)

I also have some dehydrated apples and pears that are really low carb. I don't know why my body likes Hot Pockets. They contain ingredients I am allergic to and has a fairly high carb count. Just like hot dogs and buns. Although the buns usually make me over carb if I am not careful.

Warning. My diet plan makes me gain weight. If that is a problem for you you might want to adjust it. I am allergic to nuts or I would have those as the low carb snack in place of all the diary products.

Thanks for the info.beck.

Thanks for the info.beck. it may be the extra carbs i need to cut to feel a little better.. It is day 13 since starting the Digestive enzymes and with the neuro-motility agent increased yesterday things are finally resuming. Thank goodness! Why is it you can't eat fresh fruit ? or salds? or is it just choice?

I can eat salads. They are on my vegetable with dinner list. Especially if it contains a lot more than just lettuce. I am allergic to ingredients in store bought dressings. My husband made me my own dressing from Vinegar, pepper, and spices.

Fresh fruits are greatly

Submitted by beck7422 on Fri, 03/13/2009 - 2:26pm.

Fresh fruits are greatly enjoyed by me taste wise, but allergic reactions are common and carbohydrate problems are common with fruits. It is not that I am allergic to most fruits. It is my Corn and Soy food allergies causing the problem allergy wise. Most and maybe ALL fruits are washed using a citrus wash containing corn. Even many organic fruits are washed with a citrus wash containing corn. :( For the carbohydrate problem with fruit. I can ONLY tolerate as much fruit as the size of my fist. I try to eat more than that and I will be dizzy, confused, and weak for a few hours. This fruit MUST be eaten in a meal with protein. Fruit as a snack by itself is fairly risky. I am unable to tolerate dessert, so the best "dessert" for me is a small amount of fruit with a lot of cheese.

I love the name of this

I love the name of this post! Very Nice!!! It is funny because I was thinking of "The Pasta Test." I followed my diet for a week and noticed that when I don't get enough carbs I become very ill. I noticed a wave of relief after a really bad day, sitting down to a late pasta dinner. If I go to sleep without eating some kind of carb I sometimes wake in the morning to find that I am ill.
