I'm very eager to talk with others about this connection.  Three of my seven boys is dx with autism.  The youngest is considered medically fragile and is strongly suspected of having mito.  We now wonder if all 3 of the boys have some form of mito~ they're histories are way too similar.  They've all been referred to as "atypically autistic".

I hope the research continues!

My daughter's diagnosis was originally autism, but atypical, with some additional muscle tone issues, which are now explained by her mito diagnosis. Seven boys!! Wow--you have your hands full. Jen

I am very interested in this

Submitted by taratune on Tue, 09/16/2008 - 9:59am.

I am very interested in this topic also. My son, nephew and brother all have atypical autism and now my brother has severe muscle problems (kind of like ALS) and is being worked up for Mito disease. His biopsy showed "parachrystaline inclusion bodies" or something like that.......which is suppose to be an indicator of mito disease but they haven't told us which Mito disease it is yet. All three of them are over 6 feet tall and look like they should be playing football but are sort of clumsy. My son has always had low muscle tone and is very flexible despite being rather big. He also has a weak sense of balance. I am still in the early stages of learning about Mito diseases. This is a very complicated and tricky group of diseases to understand. I appreciate the efforts that folks here are taking to help educate and support those of us who are struggling through the maze of mito. Tara

Hi, My name is Kristi, I'm new to this but I came across where others are also having Mito Dx and Autism like systems.  My daughter was diagnosed with a Mito disease - OXPHOS but now we have had some recent testing and it show that she is clinically "autistic".  I'm glad to know that My daughter is not alone.  Also I found out that there is Dr. out there that is researching this link of the two disorders....  If intereseted in chatting please get back with me....

greetings, My 14 yr. old

greetings, My 14 yr. old daughter has Mito and Autism....she is non-verbal, ambulatory, and she is my world.... We have a strong familial history of Mito....My sister,Mother, Niece, Nephew and myself all have varying degrees of severity.... All members look completely different....In my humble opinion having Mito puts kids at risk for the environmental triggers that spark Autism spectrum disorders... I am sure there are twenty five ways to describe the link between Mito and Autism, but in my world my daughter's Mito triggered her Autism....

I found out what the LUMPS

Submitted by janice on Sun, 08/09/2009 - 2:45pm.

I found out what the LUMPS AND BUMPS are: "Paracrystalline inclusions" are indicative of mitochondrial dysfunction. The challenge is determining if an individual has mitochondrial dysfunction relative to PRIMARY mitochondrial disease or SECONDARY to another disease process. FOD's can be very "tricky" to sort out as they also can be primary or secondary.(cut and posted from lauras e-mail)A diet with high complex carbs, and protien, with LOW fat, is what they reccomend.I was surprised to learn that undiagnosed high blood pressure and joints that are sore and creek are listed symptoms of an F.O.D.

Hi tina, i just came across this and thought you may be interested. Hugs, Jan Clinical trials of fatty acid treatment in ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and the autistic spectrum. Richardson AJ. University Laboratory of Physiology, Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3PT, UK. alex.richardson@physiol.ox.ac.uk Considerable clinical and experimental evidence now supports the idea that deficiencies or imbalances in certain highly unsaturated fatty acids may contribute to a range of common developmental disorders including ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia and autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). Definitive evidence of a causal contribution, however, can only come from intervention studies in the form of randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials. Published studies of this kind are still fairly few in number, and mainly involve the diagnostic categories of ADHD and dyslexia, although other trials involving individuals with dyspraxia or ASD are in progress. The main findings to date from such studies are reviewed and evaluated here with the primary aim of guiding future research, although given that fatty acid supplementation for these conditions is already being adopted in many quarters, it is hoped that some of the information provided may also help to inform clinical practice. I am also interested in the mito autism connection.  She also has 7 symptoms that mito children have.   My daughter has gotten several labels since we have been on this health journey.  In second grade she got the ADHD label.  Right before sixth grade she was diagnosed with autism (PDD-NOS)  Soon we got diagnosis of hypotonia, sensory processing disorder, auditiory processing disorder, non-verbal learning disability, visual processing disorder, dysbyosis and the most important one of all  HEAVY METAL TOXICITY.  Another behavior trait that my daughter acquired when she hit puberty was extreme violent behavior.  I'm talking about clearing counters, throwing anything that happened to be in reach, putting holes in walls, and attacking physically.  My life was in danger and so was hers.  I was ready to take her to the behavior centers that have cropped up all over.  A very wise chiropractor told me if I did this all they would do is drug her.

I took her to my wholistic Pediatrician and showed him the results of her hair analysis test for heavy metal toxicity.  My daughter was off the charts in copper, magnesium, and very high in manganese.  My daughter was very sick.  Go to safeminds.com to learn more.

I will continue writing about my journey soon.

My journey continues.......

Submitted by mary Cavanaugh on Wed, 09/15/2010 - 12:15pm.

My journey continues....... I took her to a Defeat Autism Now Doctor and he gave me a prescription for transdermal glutathione.  He told me not to start this until she had a 20 minute epsom salt bath every night for a week.  Once we started the transdermal glutathione, the results were transformational!  Autism is not behavior, it is heavy metal toxicity.   I  believe the heavy metal toxicity causes the mitochondrial disorder.  My daughter still has energy issues.  She still sleeps at times two hours after school but her  saliva test shows her hormones are very abnormal.  So abnormal that the lab did not know what to make of it.  This also affects her quality of sleep at night.  She always has trouble winding down to go to bed.  Before raising her glutathione levels she could not get out of bed to go to school.  She would also fall asleep in class and then come home and sleep for 4+ hours until I woke her up.

We have now switched to a glutathione accelerator that is in capsule form called Maxgxl because of my daughters inquiry and as a result of her continued success I have since joined the company.  This is what kids with autism need to take.  Supplements that will increase their atp production and take mercury and heavy metals out of the cell at an intracellular level.

I was fortunate to attend the autismone- generation rescue  conference in Chicago this past May and at the last session entittled How To Raise Your Child in a Toxic World?  the Dr. said   the only time we should give our children medicine is for acute conditions  because drugs are toxic.  Research shows children with autism have low glutathione levels.  You can check this with an organic profile urine test.  If the aconitic is high, you know you are low in glutathione.  If you are low in glutathione levels, you cannot deplete the everyday toxins that come into our body through our food, water, and air.  Anyone who would like more information on Maxgxl can contact me through email at max4metals@aol.com  You can learn more about this and read testimonial of parents on Dr. Corrine Allan's website brainadvance.org.  She is recovering these kids at her center by detoxing them and replacing the transmitters whose snapses were disconnected by the neuronal insult of heavy metals.  Dr. Mark Geier showed this in his slides at the conference.  Raising glutathione levels can help our children's energy problem but will their energy levels always be compromised compared to a neurotypical kid?  CoQ10 can help too.  We plan on adding this to her supplements.  I would welcome any information on this.  I urge everyone to read the article on this site which talks about impaired oxidative phosphyoration.  I wouldn't be surprised if this goes right along with autism.

Kristi, Nothing is

Submitted by JoeysMom on Sun, 01/08/2012 - 12:33am.

Kristi,

Nothing is definitive yet, but they strongly believe my little boy (Joey, 19 months) has a mitochondrial disorder and autism. Since he is so young, right now they are just calling it "hypotonia" and "sensory integration disorder." He's in the process of getting diagnosed for the mitochondrial problem--he just saw Dr. Walsh here in Indianapolis, who is excellent. They are doing a full-DNA workup on Joey right now.

The Autism is more difficult to diagnose, because of Joey's young age, but the sensory disorder he has ALOT of children with Autism have. It is a relief to know that we are not alone either!

How are you and your daughter doing? Today was a good day for Joey, not too many meltdowns. The CoQ10 supplement is helping his tone some, but his neck and throat muscles are still extremely weak so he can't talk or swallow liquids (has a feeding tube). Life is challenging, as I am sure you know. But today was not too bad of a day....
