Bikes, Trikes and Things That Go!
My child has mitochondrial disease but loves bikes, trikes and things that GO!
This is a list of potential grant sources that can be applied toward adaptive bicycles and other mobility equipment:
Cody's Wheels of Hope www.cwoh.org National non-profit organization that provides adaptive bicycles and helmets to children up to age 15. If the child is too young or developmentally unable to use an adapted bike/trike, the organization will provide ride-on toys, wagons, or trailers.
Variety Children's Charity "On The Go" www.usvariety.org/gethelp.html Adaptive recreation equipment for children with disabilities.
Challenged America www.challengedamerica.com/tell.html Mobility equipment and/or therapy (including therapeutic swimming and horseback riding), $500 limit per child.
The Wheel To Walk Foundation www.wheeltowalk.com/index_files/application.htm Mobility equipment, orthotics, and/or therapy for children with disabilities
Disabled Children's Relief Fund www.dcrf.com Equipment, therapies, and services related to a child's disability, with the goal to improve the child's quality of life and encourage integration. Grants awarded once a year, application deadline is in September.
AMBUCS www.ambucs.com Home of the AMTRYKE, a unique adapted tricycle that can be hand- or foot-powered or both. Mission of the organization is to create mobility and independence for people with disabilities. Trykes can be purchased or families can apply for a grant, the waiting list is generally long.
