Autism Biomedical Grants
My child has Autism as well as Mito. Between the two conditions, we are spending several hundred dollars on supplements and the Mito Cocktail. Are there any organizations that can help pay for the medication that our Mito Doc has recommended but our insurance doesn’t cover?
There are several non-profit organizations that offer grants for Biomedical Intervention, the term used to describe medications, food supplements, and medical treatments implemented with the goal of decreasing symptoms and increasing function. When an individual has been diagnosed with both Autism and Mito, the medications typically prescribed as part of the “Mito Cocktail” can be considered biomedical autism treatment because managing Mito symptoms has a positive influence on the child’s social awareness, self-regulation, and response to therapy. Here are some grant programs that could be used to pay for supplements and the Mito cocktail:
The Autism Relief Foundation: Any individual with an Autism Spectrum Disorder diagnosis, regardless of age, may be eligible for one of four financial assistance programs offered by this organization. Awards are made annually, applications accepted mid-July until Sept. 1. Amounts awarded generally range from $300-$1800.
Autism Care and Treatment award: grant cycle is variable, check site frequently to see if they are accepting applications
Autism Help Network Grants are based on family income and approved on a rolling basis. Send in all information at the same time; if you are waiting for a tax form, IEP, evaluation note and they are sent separately, it is unlikely that the late papers will be reunited with the file.
Helping Hand The National Autism Association’s Family first fund/helping hand grant applications are available and can only be submitted annually during June and July.
PA State Autism Mini-Grant For PA families: reimbursement of Autism treatment expenses (bio-medical incl.); Collect receipts from March 3, 2010-August 31, 2010; submit form before deadline: Sept. 10, 2010
Autism Cares Emergency Grants One-time grant up to $1000 for families in crisis: disaster, family illness/death, divorce, etc.

This is great information for kids with autism. Is there anything out there for mito families without autism? I have 4 kids and myself who are on the mito cocktail and we need assistance with funding.
